Distinguished and Famous people from Charles Sturt

🧭 Charles Sturt

Charles Sturt built The Grange in 1840 and lived there with his wife Charlotte and their children until the family's return to England in 1853. Already known for expeditions through the inland river systems, he departed from this home for his 1844 Central Australian expedition. The house later gave its name to the surrounding suburb and now operates as a museum. The house preserves a family setting behind the expeditions through which the city's namesake became widely known.

🏭 Geoff Gerard

Geoff Gerard helped turn the family’s Bowden manufacturing works into a major producer of electrical fittings and moulded plastics. New premises opened in 1936; wartime demand and later investment brought further expansion. As managing director and then chairman, Geoff combined commercial ambition with his brother Ken’s technical expertise. The Clipsal name described fittings that clipped to metal conduit, while new plastics processes broadened the business. By his retirement in 1976, the Bowden plant covered ten thousand square metres and employed six hundred staff. The local connection is sustained industrial work, with factory buildings and jobs behind a familiar trade name.

🔧 Ken Gerard

Ken Gerard brought electrical engineering and plastics expertise to the Gerard family’s Bowden factory. As factory manager and a company director, he helped develop manufacturing capacity alongside his brother Geoff’s commercial leadership. Expansion into plastic moulding and later PVC became important parts of the enterprise behind Clipsal fittings. His work extended beyond the factory: he lectured in plastics, led professional organisations and represented manufacturers in electrical approvals and standards work for more than thirty years. Bowden’s connection is practical production and management, linking a large local workplace with the less visible task of improving materials, methods and technical standards.

⛪ Tom Reed

Tom Reed served at St Michael and All Angels, Henley Beach, from 1936 to 1944, first as priest-in-charge and later as rector. His subsequent responsibilities included army chaplaincy, cathedral leadership and, eventually, the Anglican archbishopric of Adelaide. Reed was also a literary scholar whose study of Henry Kendall led to two books. He valued traditional forms of worship and could be resistant to change, but his interests extended to comic verse, painting, genealogy and golf. The Henley Beach parish records a sustained local ministry before the larger administrative demands of leading a diocese.
